The Need For an Elliptical Machine

An Elliptical Machine or Elliptical Trainer, provides a safer cardiovascular work-out. Unlike other forms of exercise, the elliptical machine is  low-impact. That means there is far less jarring, impact and stress on your knees, back, hip and other joints that take a beating during running, jogging, using treadmills and other forms of exercise. Trust me, this makes a big difference as you near middle-age. I use to be a fairly regular jogger, but when I turned 40, my hips and lower back constantly ached. At age 45, the knees started acting up. I joined a fitness club, hoping to find ways to get a cardiovascular workout that were easier on the body. I used the treadmills at first, but after a period of time on them, I began experiencing the same aches and pains associated with jogging. I felt it was time to try one of those interesting looking machines that people were gliding back and forth on using their arms and legs.  Obviously, exercise bikes provide a low-impact work-out, but there are some reasons I think that nothing beats an elliptical machine.

Upright and recumbent exercise bikes will give your legs, heart and lungs a good workout, but there is one problem: Not only are you failing to strengthen your buttocks, but you are doing the one thing you did at the office all day – that is, sit on your butt. Don’t get me wrong, a quick bike workout serves a purpose, but it fails to replace the need and desire to get up and move around. Elliptical Trainers are the perfect compromise.

Elliptical Machine vs. the Treadmill

Treadmills are great because they simulate what you do when you are walking, running or jogging outside. However, the truth is that they also emulate the same problems of actual jogging or running on pavement or hard surfaces everyday. If walking, running and jogging makes your body, back, and knees ache, so eventually, will a treadmill. Also, when you are jogging what are your arms doing? Not much. I can say from my own first-hand experience, an elliptical machine will improve the fitness of your entire body, lungs and heart without the ill-effects associated with a jarring treadmill or jogging routine.
